Chapter 2: Reset

Demons didn’t die—they reset. It was one of the few constants in the Sprawl. A mortal wound hurt like hell, but after some unpredictable stretch of time they’d flash back into existence near their corpse, pissed off and ready to make someone pay.

Jax had already decided the stranger must have been another demon. Humans couldn’t kill demons. Everyone knew that. Conventional weapons bounced off or melted. Only another demon had the juice to send one into reset.

He was halfway through mopping up the blood—thick, blackish ichor that smelled like burnt plastic—when the red flash lit the back room. Then the screaming started.

“That glowing fucker! I’ll rip his wings off next time!”

Jax froze. Exactly five minutes. He quietly set the mop aside and crept closer to the office door, listening.

Vexor was on the phone, voice raw and furious.

“Yeah, it was him. Tall bastard, moved like he owned the place. Hit me with something I’ve never seen before—blue light, clean, burned straight through. Not our kind of magic. Felt… wrong. Like the old rules don’t apply to him.”

There was a pause as the person on the other end spoke.

“No, I don’t know what he is. Some high-up enforcer? One of those forbidden ones that slipped through? Either way, he’s trouble. If he’s starting to interfere again, we’ve got problems. Tell the others to keep their eyes open.”

Jax’s heart hammered. *Forbidden ones?* He had no idea what Vexor was talking about, but it sounded like this stranger was some kind of powerful demon he’d never encountered before—maybe from the upper levels or a rival faction.

Vexor slammed something down. “Yeah, I’ll find him. Nobody does that to me and walks away.”

Jax backed away slowly. Too slowly.

The office door flew open. Vexor stepped out, still fuming, eyes scanning the bar. For a split second their gazes almost met. Jax ducked behind the bar just in time, holding his breath as the demon’s heavy footsteps passed by.

The moment Vexor turned toward the back cooler, Jax slipped out the side door into the acid rain and didn’t look back.

He took the rest of the night off. No one would miss him.

Back in his cramped capsule in Megastructure Epsilon-9, Jax did the one thing that could still make him feel like a person. He pulled out his hidden journal—an outlawed practice that could earn multiple painful resets if discovered—and began to write by the weak glow of a salvaged lamp.

Tonight something impossible happened. A blade of blue light. A man who didn’t belong. And for the first time in any of my lives… I feel like I might be waking up.
